Switches were being turned back on inside Holly Paladino, vital signs returning, and there was a new heat in her blood, a desire to put things right. It was early afternoon by the time she got to Sag Harbor. A slow crawl all the way on the 27 in a hot haze due to tourist traffic. Her first stop was the precinct where she was told Detective Harrigan was off shift and had gone home. So her next stop was the Bay Tavern right next door to the station. Harrigan’s second home. Maybe even his first.

The Tavern wasn’t anything more than a rectangular sand and sun-blasted wooden shack with a faded, weather-beaten sign outside. Inside it was long and narrow. Along the right-hand side was a bar that Harrigan was sitting up at, nursing a pint of Guinness and watching the Rockies v the Reds on the screen on the wall. Scattered around the place was a mix of tourists that had stopped by and yachties who had come up from the bay.

Paladino drew up a stool and planted herself right in front of Harrigan, ordering a shot of bourbon from the barkeep. Harrigan’s heavy, bloodshot eyes slid down from the TV screen and registered Paladino.

“I wasn’t looking for a drinking buddy,” he drawled, and his eyes slid back up to the screen.

“I just went up to the Homicide Bureau in Riverhead.”

Harrigan’s eyes slid back down to Paladino and stayed there. “Oh yeah? That’s an out-of-the-way place to be for a patrol officer.”

“Not if it’s to find out what happened with the investigation into your husband’s murder.” Paladino swigged back her bourbon, then put her hand up and ordered another.

Harrigan didn’t say anything and carried on watching the game.

“And you know what I found out?”

Harrigan’s eyes slid back down.

“Do tell.”

“The county homicide investigation into Greg’s murder was effectively suspended a month ago.”

She said the words like they were spears she was shooting straight into Harrigan’s bloated, unshaven face. Then she looked at him, watched closely for his reaction.

“Yeah, I know.”

“You know? That’s not the point. The point is I didn’t know.”

“Homicide didn’t tell you when they pulled their men off the case?”

“No. They didn’t…”

“Well, they were supposed to. That’s what they told me. They said they’d arrange for a couple of their guys to go visit you and let you know.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“They promised me they would. I was told they’d handle it.” Harrigan put his beer down and turned to face Paladino. “Listen, I can see how shitty that is for you, but Homicide must have fucked up.”

Paladino couldn’t make up her mind whether to believe her boss or straight out call bullshit on him. She straightened up on her stool.

“Why didn’t you tell me? I see you most days. It never crossed your mind to tell the victim’s wife something like that?”

Harrigan put up his hands and started to backpedal. “Okay. Sure. I can see I should have kept you informed. Sorry, I should have said something.
